Also known as Lotus Bird, Lily Trotter and Jesus Bird. As the names suggest this bird appears to walk on water as the extremely long toes and claws help it walk easily over vegetation floating on water. Adults grow to around 24cm, the birds fly swiftly and well with feet and legs dangling behind. The chicks are often seen tucked into the wings of parents as they move across lily pads either walking or swimming. The call is a sharp squeak sound.
Found throughout eastern and northern Australia near waterways, wetlands, swamp country, farmland, prefers areas of water where waterlily pads and floating vegetation provide access over water and for nesting requirements.
