Southern Bald Eagle (juvenile)

Description:

A very large bird of prey belonging to the fish eagle family. Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico.

Habitat:

Bald eagles can be found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting. In this case, the family of eagles lives in an old cypress swamp just proximal to the Ohio River in Henderson, Kentucky. Bald eagles have inhabited this particular area for a number of years.

Notes:

This spotting is a juvenile as evidenced by his dark beak and brown coloration. Bald eagles do not develop their white head and tail feathers until they are sexually mature at approximately 5 years of age.
