Giant Rock Bee

Apis dorsata

Description:

A very large bee...easily an inch or more in size.

Habitat:

Inside a flower in the Sans Souci bungalow near Nonsuch Tea Estate, Nilgiris, India. First spotted in the evening when it was actively exploring the flower head. The next day when I strolled past the flower bed early in the morning I saw the bee was asleep on the flower (last photograph); there was no movement except a gentle one of the abdomen...snoring maybe?!
