Sebastes chrysomelas
Fish was 12-14 inches long. Combination of spines, and shape of dorsal and tail fin used to support the name of Rock fish. The fish color was charcoal with blotches of yellow on the body and yellow on the spine.
This fish was caught in a crab pod in the shallow coastal waters within the protected tribal waters of the Annette Island Reserve. The Reserve is a part of the Metlakatla Indian Community, the only Indian Reservation in the state of Alaska.
The fish is within a subsistence fishing area for the Metlakatla Indian Community. The fish was released back into the environment.

Thanks for the information. Perhaps the reason that we were able to see these fish is because they are in a subsistence fishing area.
There are numerous species of rockfish (Sebastodes sp.) along the Pacific Coast from Alaska to Mexico. Three species in Puget Sound are listed under the Endangered Species Act. Others are being over-fished. They are an interesting group: they are long-lived with some species surpassing 100 years. http://www.psmfc.org/habitat/rockfish_li...
