Rural Crab Spider

Tharpyna campestrata

Description:

An attractive little spider about 8 mm long with distinct markings on abdomen. The cephalothorax was dark, plain and leathery-looking. Legs had short stiff hairs.

Habitat:

Spotted on the trunk of a eucalytpus tree in regenerated nature strip.

Notes:

The female is said to lay eggs on or under loose bark. This spider was so well camouflaged that I almost missed it.
Family: Thomisidae
