Mallard duck

Anas platyrhynchos

Description:

This specimen is a juvenile male mallard, or wild, duck that is just beginning to have the back of its head turn an identifying green.

Notes:

This year, the number of female chicks seems to greatly outnumber the number of male mallards that were hatched this season. This is one of the few that I have seen this summer.
