Ant lion

Myrmeleontidae

Description:

About half a inch long with a long neck and a big head. Their body acts like a shovel to throw sand, dirt or sticks and leaves over their head to set up a trap.

Habitat:

Usually found in sandy environments in sand trap pit which they dig themselves. The sand trap looks like an upside down cone and is used to trap small insects that the ant lion then stabs with its long pinchers to kill. They can also be found under small twigs and dirt.

Notes:

Ant lions get their name for the way they attack ants and other bugs. When handled they are seen scooting backwards in an attempt to cover themselves. Although they attack small bugs they will not bit humans.
