Yes, you can make tea from the flowers. I've done it before. Staghorn sumac has a much larger range and is more common than poison sumac. Staghorn has large red flowers, which poison sumac does not and it has much more hair on the leaves, but always take caution if you are not sure.

Poison sumac leaflets have no teeth, so if you stick with toothed sumacs you will be safe. I like the flavor of the winged sumac best.

Thanks so much. Is that the kind you can steep in water and make tea? I'm always afraid I might get poison sumac by mistake.

Yup, that is a staghorn sumac - Rhus typhina.
