Harlequin Bug

Lygaeus saxatilis

Description:

Seemed to be all red when flying but when it settled it had some black spots but was in an awkward position to photograph, wrong side of the fence on a steep bank.
Maybe 1 cm long.

Habitat:

Coastal marshes

Notes:

Best of luck to The Bug Chicks on this first trip with Project Noah on their mission. Hopefully it will be a resounding success and that there will be more, not only in the USA but perhaps throughout the world! Here is a Spanish Bug to help you on your way.

Thanks for the English common name Malcolm! In French we call it "Punaise à damier".

Thanks for the ID Daniele, according to this site http://www.treknature.com/gallery/photo2... it is known as a Harlequin Bug. Another site calls it a Seed bug.
