Urocitellus columbianus
The Columbian ground squirrel is a species of rodent in the Sciuridae family. They are only active approximately 100 days each year. The males emerge first from hibernation each Spring - prior to the emergence of leafy vegetation - and rely on food stores previously cached to survive. Females emerge soon after, mate, and reproduce with the number of offspring ranging from three to five.
Prefers grasslands and sedges, but can be found in intermontane valleys, open woodland, subalpine meadows, etc.
