Yes Jamie, mother birds expel their babies from the nest when something is wrong with them. It very sad, but she does this to have healthy offspring. There is a possibility your bird got pushed out by a sibling. Sibling rivalry is highly common in birds.

i brought one to a bird rehab just the same age he was in a nest of 4 and had been pecked out and fallen from 20 ft white mangrove.
