Spotting

Description:

Brown. Cross pattern texture on abdomen segment.

Habitat:

My apartment has some bushes and plants around it.

Notes:

Found on my window net. I went out, caught a spider, a cricket, and 2 pill bugs for it to eat in the shoe box house I made for it. When I can back, I caught a glimpse of it devouring the spider. After 2 days, the 2 pill bugs and the cricket still survived so I released them along with the mantis.

Duy, beautiful find! This is a male mantis from Genus Stagmomantis. There are a couple of species from this genus found in California, S. californica and S. limbata. They are similar in appearance so it might be difficult to tell which one he is.
S. limbata: http://bugguide.net/node/view/149885
S. californica: http://bugguide.net/node/view/7985

There may be some differences in range but I don't have that info for California specifically. You might be able to find the info with a local insect guide. Hope this helps!
