Elm Sawfly (larva)

Cimbex americana

Description:

The largest sawfly in North America, the larvae of Cimbex americana can grow up to 50 mm in length! Photo two displays the emission of a clear, bluish liquid in defense. I found this interesting as the defense liquids I've usually seen have been reddish or amber in color.

Habitat:

Found deep in a forest in Maine, consisting of both deciduous and coniferous trees.

Notes:

Lifer!
