A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Menura novaehollandiae
This large ground dwelling bird was noticed for its loud calling songs, imitating other local birds such as cockatoos, whip birds and kookaburras but with more enthusiasm than you would normally expect. This male is evidenced by its long trailing tail-feathers which can be fanned out when courting to produce a spectacular lyre shaped display.
Montane wet forest habitat.
They do produce mound nests but this one was scratching extensively for leaf litter snacks.

Thank you AntónioGinjaGinja
They are common where the habitat is good, and certainly heard more easily than seen.
And its always special to see them.
Awesome find Martinl, this bird is a real preciosity, congrats and thanks for sharing
They chatter to each other across the valley to attempt to perform a better mimic of a cockatoo or whip-bird or chainsaw. They are very energetic in their calling but quite obvious as their calls change, mimicking one bird, then another.
Amazing things this bird can do.
