Emesaya brevipennis
This stick mantis was believed to be a walking stick until it flew, fortunately we were doing water quality class and had nets handy. This gorgeous specimen had shades of red and purple.

You are correct Forest, thank you! I was fooled by my angle believing I saw the characteristic head of a mantid, and then I read the Brunner's came in various hues.
This amazing insect looks to actually be a Thread-legged Assassin Bug! I think there is a good chance that this is Emesaya brevipennis.
