Armillaria often appear terrestrial, I have seen them pop up from roots of a host 7m away.

I'm not sure...I looked that up, and it looks like it mostly grows directly on wood, no? These were on the ground. It was in the woods, though, so there may have been some wood underneath. It does seem to look like a few of the pics I've seen of armillaria gallica.
