My respects go to this 400-yo tree situated in the middle of the National Park of Arenal Volcano. These trees can grow up to 60–70 m and their trunk can be up to 3 m in diameter. The trunk and many of the larger branches may be crowded with very large, robust simple thorns. Adult trees produce several hundred seed pods. The pods contain seeds surrounded by a fluffy, yellowish fibre that is a mix of lignin and cellulose. These fibers can be used as an alternative to down as filling material. The seeds also produce an oil used locally in soap and that can be used as fertilizer.
