Fiery Searcher (Caterpillar Killer)

Calosoma scrutator

Description:

Absolutely marvelously colored beetle. 3 cm in length and about 1 1/4 cm in width. The elytra is a stunning metallic green with a reddish margin. Dark colored pronotum with orange border. Adults eat caterpillars which is where their other common name comes from. Picture 3 doesn't really capture the color well because of the speedlight I was using. This one was attracted to light while mothing. UV and normal lights were in use. Not sure if this is a common occurrence.

Habitat:

This was found in a open field by a pond. There is a wooded area near the location.

Notes:

Quickly became my favorite beetle. First time finding one of these beauties, and hopefully I'll find more.

They are! The pictures don't even do the actual colors justice.
