This beetle was about 7 cm long (approx 2.5"). It was moving slowly over an area of floor where bread crumbs and other food had been spilled. When it took off it flew rather clumsily and not far. S

Habitat:

Spotted on the concrete floor of a picnic shelter by a playground set in suburbia on a lawn in an open landscape with shrubs (undeveloped land formerly cleared for development growing into young forest).
