Tropical Paper Wasp

Polistes sp.

Description:

Vespidae; Polistinae; Polistini; Polistes sp. Wikipedia says this about Polistes wasps: " Their innate preferences for nest-building sites leads them to commonly build nests on human habitation, where they can be very unwelcome; although generally not aggressive, they can be provoked into defending their nests. All species are predatory, and they may consume large numbers of caterpillars, in which respect they are generally considered beneficial." Although I can't identify this wasp to species level, we often have wasps like this around our buildings and Wikipedia's description of their preference of nest building seems to confirm that this is a Polistes sp.

Habitat:

Spotted on a pot plant in our front yard.
