Evan's reindeer lichen

Description:

Cladonia evansii is a fruticose lichen with a sponge like appearance. Also known as powder-puff lichen, or reindeer moss.

Habitat:

Spotted growing in sandy areas under pine and oak trees at the Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama. In some areas it was completely covering the ground, usually under trees and shrubs.
