Tawny Emperor

Asterocampa clyton

Hindwing uppersides are orange with black submarginal spots in one form, and all black in the other form. Wing Span: 1 5/8 - 2 3/4 inches (4.2 - 7 cm).

Habitat:

Red Oak in wooded portion of wildlife habitat yard.

Notes:

The first real cold front of the fall came through with high winds. This butterfly was struggling to fly in the wind. Finally it managed to land on a leaf, where it clung, bouncing up and down as the wind tossed the tree around.
