Praying Mantis

Mantis religiosa

Description:

Sorry for the poor photo. Taken with camera phone. The praying mantis is a large insect that can grow to about 3 inches. The front legs are bent in a way that makes the insect look like it is praying. This one had very brown wings and the insect seemed well camouflaged in the fall residue on the ground. I have never seen one so brown. Very little green on it.

Habitat:

Grassy places, widespread throughout Europe and North America. It is a native of Europe, but came to the U.S. in the 1800's on a merchant ship.
