Juglans cinerea
The delectable kernel of the Butternut is diabolically hard to extract. Image three shows dried walnuts we picked 20 years ago. We couldn't crack them open. I finally brought them downstairs and starting feeding them to the squirrels. My husband said they were still good to eat and I laughed. He bought a special nut cracker and sure enough they were delicious. Image 2 is a small nut we just found on the ground near a tree. They only bear nuts every 7 years. They are also dying off due to a disease.
