orb weaver

Eriovixia sp.

Description:

Resembles some images of Eriovixia laglaizei http://www.flickr.com/photos/14096272@N0... This spider species appears to be active at night (See previous night spotting here http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/475... ) but it was spotted here waiting out the day hiding among twin cicada exuviae. It bears some morphological similarities to a spiny orb-weaver.

Habitat:

Spotted on a leaf of Piper betle in a large semi-urban yard & garden near a disturbed patch of remnant forest, in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.

Just a coincidence, sharing a leaf with molted exoskeletons :-)

Very interesting shot Scott. Are those molted skins or past meals?

Thanks very much, Atul! It does look like Eriovixia sp. Did you have a close link to pass on? Yes I mentioned it was the same on the other spotting.
