American Beech

Description:

The American Beech grows to 80 ft. Flowers bloom in rounded clusters in the spring and are succeeded by three sided nuts as shown in picture 2 (containing 2 shiny nuts). The nuts provide food for a variety of wildlife. Beeches are unusual because their bark remains smooth - even on old trees. Colonies of these trees grow from root suckers. The leaves are elliptical. long pointed at tip, with coarse, saw-toothed edges; turning yellow and brown in the fall.

Habitat:

Uplands and well-drained lowlands with rich, moist soil.
