That should read "extended mandibles".
I'm not sure, but there area few crickets in that part of Africa who have these funny extenced mandibles, and this appears to be one of them. I"ll look around some more for some image for your to compare to what you saw.
How sure are you? Think I should list it as a positive ID?
Probably a type of King cricket, I'm thinking Henicus brevimucronatus, but there is very little information on the web.

Looks more like a cricket than a grasshopper to me.
