Sciurus carolinensis
Primarily grey in color, red/brown coloration in the dorsal area as you can see. About 1 foot in length, head to tail. Invasive species in WA state.
Trash can, trees, surrounding community college campus.
Very agressive variety of squirrell, known to actually leap from trash cans at passerbys and steal any food items they may be carrying. Bear mace is advised when venturing in this area. Tread lightly.
Thanks for the info Trevor, I had a very reliable friend in the way of squirrel ID tell me otherwise. You were correct in assuming that Fox Squirrels are not native here. They are a much larger species (up to 2 ft long), the eastern greys are about half the size.
When I saw that you were from Washington state, I became confused. I knew of Fox squirrels here in the eastern United States, but I was wondering if there was a western variety. I did a little research, and it looks like there are populations cropping up in the western parts of the states. Conservationalists beware: invasive species aren't limited to non-natives!
