Harpia harpyja
juvenile, maybe 8 - 10 months old
rainforest
The BBC was filming a program in Guyana and it included footage of a young harpy eagle. They had been climbing up a small tree beside a huge kapok tree which contained the nest. They offered me a chance to join them up in the tree and I couldn't refuse. It was amazing and kind of scary to be up 100' (30m) in a tree but fantastic to be so close to such an amazing and elusive bird. They had been going up in the tree in hopes of the adults returning but had no luck the few days I was around. This bird was old enough to fly but hung around the trees near the nest.

Thanks auntnance, Joshua and Leonardo. Leonardo, just to be clear, this isn't a captive animal.
Gorgeous animal. When she is raised in captivity until the handlers are away from her (This is true.) Great work, dandoucette!
awesome spotting Dan!
But I thought they said they were in Venezuela.
I saw that, too. Charmed life you're living there, Dan. Magnificent good fortune.
I just saw the BBC special on my local PBS station, amazing video and story.
