Green-head ant

Rhytidoponera metallica

Description:

Large headed ants about 7 mm long with metallic head and body that have a beautiful teal, green and purple sheen.

Habitat:

Spotted in an urban garden very actively searching and collecting food . In this case a few of them were very interested in a fallen flower possibly attracted to nectar.

Notes:

These ants are endemic to Australia and are found everywhere in the mainland. Not seen in Tasmania. They are said to have a painful sting.
