Furrow Spider

Larinioides sp.

Description:

A small spider with a big body. It looks like an American house spider, but being here in the Amazon jungle I have to wonder if it could be the same. The body is light gray with a straight black line down the middle of the back and a wavy line down each side.

Habitat:

This spider was found @ 20:40 on the side of a cement block building in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador.

Notes:

I noticed piles of insect parts around his stomping grounds and some white rings that are the remains of something I can't remember now.

Forest, I've been looking and I can't find anything that shows a Larinioides spider in S. America, but it sure looks right. It is found in C. America, so it may be that it just hasn't been noted yet for Ecuador. In the 5,000 plus snakes I've handled in 80+ species, we found several that had not been listed in Ecuador before. Just a lack of research. I'll keep looking.

Thanks much. I have no idea if it's a house spider or not. That was the closest I saw with a quick check of my limited arachnid ID sources. Thanks for the tip.

This spider reminds me a lot of a Furrow Spider (Genus Larinioides), rather than a House Spider. However, I don't know Ecuadorian species, so a local reference would be helpful for you, I think.
