Boletus rex-veris
This is the Spring King Bolete. Highly sought after, this mushroom is one of several referred to as "Porcini", and it is as magnificent as it is delicious. It's a large, robust bolete with no dramatic color changes, whose association with Abies grandis and Pinus ponderosa and habit of fruiting in the spring/early summer distinguishes it from other similar fleshy boletes which tend to fruit in the fall.
On the East Side of the Cascade crest, in the Metolius River Valley, where the canopy is typically a mix of Abies grandis, Pinus ponderosa, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Calocedrus decurrens with a sparse understory. It's worth mentioning that these were found in the scar of a very large burn from almost ten years ago, the B+B complex burn.
I love to eat these.
