Northern Water Snake

Nerodia sipedon sipedon

Description:

Approximately 4' long with olive brown dorsal and tan saddles with black outline.

Habitat:

Trailhead on high stream embankment. Have seen pair with likely nests less than 10' apart.

Notes:

Usually seen sunning on high embankment and make quick retreat over bank lip to likely nest when Doyle the dog attempts to say hi. Today as I approached trailhead snake was motoring across trail to more shaded side away from stream bank.
