Hi mnc2113, just to add a little information to my I.D. suggestion. You might have been thinking that your specimen was a wasp or a bee, but it is actually a fly. If you look at the website in my suggestion, it will give you an idea of what you are looking for. Then maybe you could search through internet pictures of Family - Syrphidae and almost certainly Subfamily - Syrphinae. You will get there in the end. I just saw your spotting a few minutes ago and did not yet have time to search, but I will have a look and let you know if I find the exact species. John B.
