Lycoperdon echidnatum
A white ball. Golf ball like only with outward dimples. Was a bit smaller than a half dollar coin.
Found in a lawn.
I'm not sure if it is the same as this species , but I used to eat a smooth variety of puffballs when they were young. They grew to be 8 inches across and we would slice them and sauteé them in butter. Yum.
Thank you for the suggestions as well - after looking into it, it seems to be a spiny puffball after all. Pretty neat.
It could be a young Spiny Puffball, Lycoperdon achinatum. What a beautiful specimen! How big was it?
