Robber Fly

Asilidae

Description:

There are over 7,000 species of Robber flies. They have a dense "moustache" of bristles (mystax), and 3 simple eyes between the two large compound eyes. The short proboscis is used to stab and inject victims with saliva containing enzymes which paralyze and digest the insides; the fly then sucks the liquefied meal through the proboscis. Yum!

Habitat:

Found all over the world. My photos taken in Southern NSW, Australia

Notes:

There are a number of different robber flies, and it seems difficult to tell the exact species. Here are a couple I have seen in my yard each Summer, I have no idea of the species - the two "green" close-ups are the same individual
