Common Tern

Sterna Hirundo

Description:

Pale grey back and upperparts and otherwise white plumage. Bill orange-red with black tip. Black cap present in summer.

Habitat:

Common and widespread around the coast of Ireland from mid-April to late August. Seen on large inland lakes and rivers, colonial nester on undisturbed shingle and sandy beaches.

Notes:

Spot it flying over the edge of the beach as the tide was receding.
