Quaker Parrot

Myiopsitta monachus

Description:

Also known as the Monk Parakeet, these small hook billed birds are originally from Argentina and other areas of South America but there is a growing feral population that has adapted to colder climates in the United States. Their large, community nests have been spotted in many neighborhoods and suburbs throughout the Chicago area.

Notes:

Last week my husband, son and I went on a Wild Quaker Parrot search near our home. We were lucky to have found 4 large nests in a residential neighborhood in a suburb of Chicago. We saw more than 50 of these darling green birds that day. We own a blue Quaker so it was easy for us to track them down due to their loud, quirky chattering. It was so much fun to watch them grooming each other, snuggling and haning out in the trees together.
