Red Shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

L 15-19",W 37-42". Heavily spotted b&w on wings w/brownish back. Breast barred orange & white. Rusty shoulder patch. (at maturity)

Prefers moist woodlands, near water & swamps

I was very lucky to spot this magnificent creature while visiting one of Florida's beautiful state parks (Highland's Hammock). My husband and I spent about 45minutes in awe of him. We both took many pictures and thanked the hawk for allowing us such a wonderful opportunity. Description obtained through personal copy of "National Geographic Field Guide to Birds-Florida"
