These are big black ants. Interestingly they come out at the start of spring season. Those who have wings tend to fly away and those without wings try to hold them back and even kill them while doing so. Strange behavior. (picture 5)

Hey thanks. Looks like the female ants are very obsessed with the males. haha.
Winged ants are the male of their species. This may explain the behaviour...
