Rocky Mountain Bee Plant

Cleome serrulata

Description:

Petals that look like fireworks exploding. This one is white, but there are pinkish and purple ones in our yard, too. Leaves are spirally arranged.

Habitat:

We hired an organic gardener who specializes in edible landscapes to plant a miniature orchard for us, and he planted these flowers in the swales to interact symbiotically with the trees. We have almost an acre of yard in an older suburban neighborhood with mature trees. These are a native plant, although he seeded them.

Notes:

Our gardener, who planted these for us, says they're a native plant, but he's never seen them grow as large as they have in our yard. They really like it here.
