White River Crayfish

Procambarus acutus

Description:

Large (approx. 5 in.), reddish crayfish burrowing in mud by pond

Notes:

I occasionally see these in the campus pond at the University of Massachusetts. I came across this one excavating a burrow in the mud.

Thanks. I'll ID it as acutus.

they both have the red tubercles, but P. clarkii isnt native to Massachusetts as far as i am aware.

Thanks for the ID suggestion. Do the bright red tubercles on the claws suggest Procambarus clarkii instead of P. acutus? I have no real familiarity with ID'ing crayfish so I'm grateful for anything knowledgeable folk can tell me.
