Hoatzin

Opisthocomus hoazin

Description:

This curious species of bird was very common along the riverbanks, often found in small groups. The bird is very distinct, and is believed to be related to ancient species of lizard-like birds. It is so unique, in fact, that it has its own family, and the taxonomy of the bird is debated. It has sharp claws that help it grip, and it also produces a foul smelling compounds to deter predators. It has a digestive system similar to ruminants to break down and ferment leaves. Strange indeed!
