Yabby

Cherax destructor

Description:

Freshwater crustaceans. Blue-green in colour and very active at night when they come out to feed on algae and plant remains. They also eat fish and other animal remains. I found them in a dam on a farm. They create burrows in the dam where they could wait out dry periods for a few years.

Habitat:

Freshwater muddy creeks, dams and ponds.

Notes:

All juveniles and females carrying eggs under their tails must be returned to the water to keep a healthy population.
