They are amazing and so well adapted for what they do. For them to capture a monkey is serious business, and shows their true power. I love raptors, and have rescued several over the years and rehabbed them back to health and released them back to the wild. I also have friends that are falconers and the Harpy Eagle is their "Unicorn." There are some that have been trained and do an amazing job, however, with a bird this size and as majestic as they are, I don't feel that humans should "use" them. Even though through out history it's documented that they have been used, even by the Inca/Maya, and other ancient tribes of South America.
Brandon, I agree with you completely. It is like to see a Cheetah locked in a small cage, breaks the heart. Once I saw a video in Discovery Channel, showing one of these beautys catching slots and monkeys for meal. Powerfull birds.
Truly amazing raptor! I read some very very old accounts of these being used in falconry. I have seen a couple in Zoos and sort of felt bad that they were there. They are such a majestic animal I feel the space they are kept in is far too small for their size and what they need to have true freedom of flight. I certainly would love to see one of these in action in the wild!
