This tree is not an evergreen and will shed its needles each fall. It is also an early colonist (sometimes a pioneer or weedy) species and does very well in old, filled in bogs.

Also known as the Hackmatak, eastern/American/red/black larch. Provided are photos of two individuals, to show the change in coloration.
