I'm in a similar situation - I've been in the US less than 2 years so I have to look pretty much everything up first time. Project Noah is helping me enormously with getting to grips with all the new species of birds & insects.

Yes I have a number of books but have really only had the opportunity to persue this area of interest; this year - (home from travelling) Thanks for your knowledge..

They do look very much like fritillaries - though you are more likely to see them on a tree trunk than on flowers as they prefer sap to nectar.
