Calypte anna
I'd like to introduce everyone to "Andy", the Anna's hummingbird! Andy is ever-present here in our little corner of the "wild hinterlands" of Northern California in Sonoma County. Of all of the many year-round avian residents here, Andy is perhaps the most visible and the most vocal. Andy voices his displeasure when anyone steps out my front door into "his" yard and keeps advance lookout for all of the predator raptors. Andy also does his high-pitched whistle oval aerial acrobat act sometimes but you can hear him vocalize, too. To me, it sounds like "RrrrrrrrRICK-ahhhh! RrrrrrrrRICK-ahhhh! Chicka-chicka! Chicka-chicka!"
Dry hills, chaparall and oak woodlands.
I have many more photos of Andy -- as well as video of him vocalizing -- but these two are my favorite shots.

Hope to see Maury's friend Gladys,Vinny, the owls and the rest of your bird friends:) Very joyful !
Me, too, Misako!
My husband laughs at me because he says I'm the only person he's ever known who NAMES all the local birds! I counter that I haven't named ALL of them -- just "Maury, Jr. and Gladys" (the local mated red-tails), "Andy", "Mr. & Mrs. Hooters" (the great horned owls), "Vinny" (the turkey vulture) and "Whitey Ford" (the white-tailed kite). LOL! ;^D
I love hummingbirds!
Wow ! I just love the story behind your spottings! you should really write a book.
