Eurasian Green-winged Teal

Anas crecca

Description:

Rufous head, dark green ear patch, small narrow, black bill, fine detailed pattern on side, horizontal white line on sides. I believe this is quite a rare sight in southwest Washington state, where we mainly see the Green-winged Teal, which has the vertical white line on the sides.

Habitat:

Ponds in forests and deciduous woodlands, as well as marshes and wetlands.

Notes:

I was very fortunate to see, let alone photogaph the Eurasian version of this duck. On my visit to the Ridgefield NWR, I was given a tip by a friendly volunteer where I might see this duck. I arrived at the spot about five minutes later and it was right where he said it would be. About 30 feet from the road I was on, the duck was in a spot where I could at least get a shot or two off. But in a few more seconds, it had turned to the left and disappeared into the grass. Not the greatest photo but it was a good addition to my life list.
