Description:

A small black and white woodpecker with a barred pattern on the back resembles the rungs of a ladder. Males have a red crown that extends from the eye to the back of the head.

Habitat:

Spotted at Joshua Tree National Park. Desert scrub and Joshua tree woodland mix habitats.
